FORECAST FOR THE OWENS VALLEY, MAMMOTH AND MONO COUNTY
PROVIDED BY DENNIS MATTINSON
EASTERN SIERRA WEATHER FORECASTER
KSRW 92.5 / 96.5 FM AND TV-33

WEDESDAY, 27-AUG-08, 6:58 AM

A LARGE UPPER RIDGE OVER CENTRAL CALIFORNIA WILL DOMINATE OUR WEATHER UNTIL AT LEAST FRIDAY. THE RESULT WILL BE ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES, THOUGH NOT RECORD SETTING, FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. A POINT OF INTEREST, DEATH VALLEY STILL LOOKS TO HAVE HIGH DAYTIME TEMPERTURES NEAR 125 WITH OVERNIGHT LOWS IN THE LOWER 90S ON FRIDAY. MONSOON MOISTURE WILL BE SLOW TO ARRIVE AS THAT RIDGE SHIFTS TO THE EAST, ALLOWING FOR A SOUTHEASTERLY FLOW ON OR ABOUT FRIDAY. ISOLATED THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY STILL LOOKS POSSIBLE ON FRIDAY INTO THE WEEKEND WITH A NICE COOL DOWN ON SUNDAY, SAY 5 - 8 DEGREES, AS AN UPPER TROUGH MOVES ON TO THE WEST COAST. TIMING IS ALWAYS AN ISSUE HERE, SO IF THAT TROUGH IS ON TIME, IT MOSTLY LIKELY WILL PUSH ANY MOISTURE OUT OF THE AREA ON SUNDAY. STAY TUNED FOR UPDATES.

TODAY FOR THE OWENS VALLEY: SUNNY BLUE SKIES. HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE AROUND 100 FOLLOWED BY OVERNIGHT LOWS IN THE UPPER 50S. NORTHWEST WIND 3 - 7 MPH.

TOMORROW FOR THE OWENS VALLEY: SUNNY. HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE AROUND 101 AND OVERNIGHT LOWS IN THE UPPER 50S. NORTHWEST WIND 5 MPH.

TODAY FOR THE TOWN OF MAMMOTH LAKES: CLEAR SKIES. DAYTIME HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE AROUND 79 AND EVENING LOWS AROUND 49. WEST WIND 5 MPH.

TOMORROW FOR THE TOWN OF MAMMOTH LAKES: MOSTLY SUNNY SKIES. HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE AROUND 81 AND EVENING LOWS AROUND 51. NORTHEAST WIND 5 MPH.

TODAY FOR MONO COUNTY: SUNNY. HIGH DAYTIME TEMPERATURES WILL RANGE FROM 82 - 92 AND EVENING LOWS 41 - 51. NORTHEAST WIND 10 MPH.

TOMORROW FOR MONO COUNTY: SUNNY SKIES. HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL RANGE FROM 84 - 94 AND OVERNIGHT LOWS 44 - 54. NORTHWEST WIND 10 MPH.

NOTE: DENNIS' FORECAST ORIGINATES FROM THE FORT INDEPENDENCE EPA METEOROLOGICAL STATION. BECAUSE WEATHER CONDITIONS VARY GREATLY FROM LOCATION TO LOCATION IN THE EASTERN SIERRA, THIS FORECAST IS FOR A SPECIFIC AREA AND TIME FRAME.

Dennis,
Has the monsoonal moisture been translating into rain up in the Sierras? Do you expect much or any rain with this system?
Thanks

We have had heavy downpours in VERY isolated areas this season; the example is the Baxter Pass area in July where an estimated 5 - 6 inches fell. But overall, the monsoon season here has been a "bust." As far as this weekend is concerned, yes we might get some rain at the crest level and that would of course include Mt. Whitney and surrounding area. The trough moving down from the Gulf of Alaska and pusing through the PAC NW on Satuday and Sunday is actually pretty aggressive for this time of year. The real issue is the winds associated with this system; they are expected to reach 30 - 40 MPH over the crest on Saturday. We will have to wait and see how this pans out and I should have a better handle on how much moisture and wind will occure later today.
