I am confused about how to read the weather report on the website for Mt. Whitney. When I hit the button for the Whitney summit, it refers to a location about 12 miles wsw of Lone Pine and an altitude of 12000 is feet. That's obviously lower than the summit, can someone help me interpret as I have a permit for September 12-14 and want to track the weather in preparation.

thanks

John

The forecast is for a region/cell around the summit. The altitude listed is the average for the cell. There is no weather station on the summit. As noted in What can go wrong on Whitney the summit weather is often unpredictable in the summer.

lido14, that is the best we could do for the elevation. I played with the latitude and longitude parameters in the NOAA URL to get the highest elevation possible. The site lists
"Point Forecast: 12 Miles WSW Lone Pine CA
36.56N -118.27W (Elev. 12812 ft)"

so it is 1300 ft. lower than the summit. (And it is not the coordinates of the Whitney summit; using those gave a lower elevation result.) The temps would be several degrees lower at the summit. But due to its exposure, wind predictions might be off by much more.

The predictions are all estimates based on the overall area weather, and it is mostly produced by a computer program.

I emailed NOAA to ask if they could tweak their map so we could get a 14,500 elevation weather prediction, but I never even got a reply. Makes me think the entire NOAA is just one big computer program with nobody left to turn out the lights.

If you want a real weather station, check the White Mountain weather link. It is great for checking current conditions, and it is only 250 ft lower than the summit of Whitney.

John,

In addition to the advice above watch for the forecasts posted here on weekdays daily by dmatt. His forecasts have been the most accurate I've seen for the Eastern Sierra.
