i am a recent convert to using a hammock instead of a tent. in the east tree access is not an issue. i am concerned about lack of trees on the route we are taking to the top of mount whitney.

we will be staying at long lake or hight lake, then guyout creek, then guitar lake and then outpost camp or trail camp. does anyone know if these sited have trees , or are we above the tree line.

we start our trip in 2 weeks, does anyone have any idea of the weather and what is the availability of water. i typically hike with 4 liters of water, i wonder if i need to carry more.

thank dave

You are going to be above tree line for a few of those campsites.

long lake trees
high lake no trees
guyout creek trees
guitar lake no trees
outpost camp trees
trail camp-no trees

weather-who knows?

availability of water-reports of all the usual sources are fine

i typically hike with 4 liters of water, i wonder if i need to carry more----I can't imagine a need for more, and even then, only on summit day, and perhaps Guyot to Crabtree.

Have fun! Great hike!

I have also just started playing with a hammock. Not sure what you are using, but mosquitoes haven't been a problem for me. My problem has been trying not to get cold from underneath me, as I keep sliding off my pad.

I USE A HENNESEY ASYMETRIC IT HAS A FLY AND MOSQUITO NETTING , QUITE COMFORTABLE HAVE NOT REALLY USED IT IN THE COLD YET, BUT I WOULD THINK AN OVER SIZE CLOSED CELL FOAM PAD WOULD WORK WELL AND STILL BE LIGHT , I JUST CAME OFF A 3 DAYS TRIPI BOTH NIGHTS IN POURING RAIN AND MANAGED TO STAY DRY IN THE HAMMOCK , THE REST OF THE TRIP WAS A PROBLEM HOWEVER.
