I tried private messaging for the first time and it didn't work too well for me. How does a person that you send a private message to know that he has a private message addressed to him? Is it indicated when he logs in or does he have to specifically check for private messages? If it's the latter case, a person who has never used private messages will not check for it and wouldn't know if someone sent him a private message. Thanks.

When you get a new private message, you should see a flag next to "My Stuff" above.

Also, in My Stuff, My Preferences, you can set the question,
"Do you want to be notified via email when you receive a private message?" to Yes.

But please, keep messages to a minimum -- delete old ones. The best thing for a private message is to pass along your email address, and communicate that way. I don't want to waste lots of space on the board storing old private messages. The private message limit is 20.

Hope this helps.

Update 1-28-08:  I found a problem today: If you delete a PM thread from your list, it is gone. But the other person's thread remains in his/her list. Today someone posted a new reply to my deleted thread. And I did NOT receive it! So beware.

Please Please PLEASE: Use private messages only to exchange your email addresses, and then switch to using email. This board is NOT a private email facility. Do not use Doug's dime when you can use email.

And by the way, you CAN tell the board to display your email address in your profile. Check mine, for example.

Another gripe for the UBB folks: If you start a private message, and say, forget to put in a subject, click "submit", it complains about your blatant and unforgivable error, and suggests that you click the "Back" button to return.

When you do so, the text of the message you so laboriously crafted is *gone*.

T-H-A-N-K-S-!-!-!

Really, as a programmer, losing people's hard entered data is a "no-no". I know it's a little harder to hold on to transient data when doing web pages, but hey, they could stuff the text in a cookie or something, or simply throw the error up on the same page without clearing the contents (vs. moving you to another before complaining).

This is unfortunately not unique to this site or system. I've learned, if I'm typing more than just a brief comment, to copy my text (highlight and CTRL-C) before hitting submit. This also helps if my connection hiccups.

Oh, yeah. Me too. Didn't really occur to me that I needed to do this when I lost that PM tho. (Who would have thought that lack of a subject would be so fatal they'd throw you into a completely new page to complain about it!)

Sad that we all have to think to do stuff like this. Sad commentary on the state of the art of software development.

Ouch! Software development ain't an easy task. There are always unexpected situations coming up. A good developer will beat up his/her code by throwing every curve he can think of at it and ensuring that it handles it well. The more odd situations handled, the longer it takes. And then the work gets passed on to someone else, and because that person doesn't think the same way, other problems will show up.

This process could go on for a very long time, and little would get turned out. ...or you put it into production, and hope the users will be ok with some glitches.

I was actually speaking as a software developer myself.

Some, ah, er, most of the code I look at - it's simply amazing to me how unable people are to think about a problem and come up with a clear and straightforward method for addressing it. It's no wonder code is a buggy as it is.

Of course, even Microsoft, the richest software company in the world, and able to literally hire the smartest people on the planet, is still unable to get it's act together, so I guess I'm just expecting too much or something... (Sigh)
