When doing a search, many unrelated links come up. Why is that?

It is hard to say without knowing your exact search criteria. Did you search just the subject or the whole message? Did you use quotes around text to search for a phrase?
There is a protocol for adding and and or logic to your keywords. Look at the help window for the syntax. It could be that you used too many common words and they were or'ed together vice being and'ed together.

I wish the search results wouldn't list every post in a thread, too.
The software is a work in progress. The folks at UBB crank out upgrades every few months.

VersatileFred,
I think I got it figured out but correct me if I'm wrong. My search which was for the body of the topic was Breckenridge Mountain. An endless number of non-related topics came up. When I did it again like this "Breckenridge Mountain", it narrowed it down to the single specific topic. I'm guessing that the word mountain was too broad but when tied to Breckenridge in the quotations, it searched the phrase as a single unit. Is my thinking correct here?

Yes, if you do a search with more than one word, most search engines will look for "any" word in the list. Enclosing it it quotes usually narrows it to "all" words. Experts in search know how to use boolean expressions to get exactly what they want. (Am I making myself seem more sophisticated than I am?)

If you open the "Advanced Search Tips" link in the search window you see the following options:
Advanced Search Tips- Use +keyword for required keywords.
- Use -keyword to exclude posts with a keyword.
- Use quotes around a phrase to search for a phrase.
- Use spaces around the word to match the exact word. Example " word "

I also added some information on the differences that are in the new search function to the Message Posting Tips.

I also added some examples showing the different search options to the same block in the Message Posting Tips. It turns out that there are 4 posts containing Microsoft, 2 posts containing Microsoft Word, and lots of posts containing word.
KEYWORD SEARCH EXAMPLES| Search String | Description
|
|---|
| Microsoft Word | Any post containing "Microsoft", "Word", or both
| | "Microsoft Word" | Only posts containing "Microsoft Word" ("Microsoft" and "Word" next to each other)
| | +Microsoft +Word | Posts containing both "Microsoft" and "Word" (but not necessarily next to each other) | | +Microsoft -Word | Posts containing "Microsoft" but not containing "Word" |
Note: If you use + or - in your search string, be sure to preface all words with + or - and include a space between the words. Otherwise you may get unexpected results in the search. For example, the search string +Microsoft Word only filters on Microsoft.

A hint for anyone using the new search function. Unlike the 'classic' version, you have to designate a date range. I assumed that absent setting an actual date range it would default to all available dates - that's not the case.
If you don't do this, your search will be limited by the default date range shown when you bring up the search page, which is very limited.

Also note that the search function only matches specific words. It does not appear to match partial words (like is possible with wild cards).

If y'all have any input path to the UBB folks, it would sure be nice to be able to do partial word searches.
I was trying to search for some folks by their 'Board' names, but not sure of complete spelling. No way to find them unless and until they post without ability to search for the parts of their handles that I know for sure.
UBB is written in perl/PHP, yes? If so, implementing regular expressions (i.e. wildcard characters) in their searches should be not all that difficult. It's ingrained into the language in perl's case, and PHP not too much less so.

Well, I find the search lacking, too. When you do a search, it sometimes lists nearly every post in an entire thread separately. I wish they would just give a single post from a thread, maybe the first one in the thread matching the search criteria.
And the software is written in PHP. Wish I knew the language better.
